Wat is eigenlijk een paparazzo-foto?
Het Britse mediabedrijf News International, bekend van kranten als The Sun, News of the World en The Times, heeft zichzelf opgelegd geen paparazzo-foto's meer te publiceren van Kate Middleton, de vriendin van de Britse kroonprins William. Maar deze beslissing heeft alleen maar vragen opgeroepen over wat nu precies een paparazzo-foto is. The Times publiceerde dezelfde dag namelijk wel straatfoto's van mejuffrouw Middleton in paparazzostijl, gemaakt door een fotograaf van een gereputeerd persbureau.
The Independent probeert vandaag licht te brengen in deze kwestie:

When asked to expand on its definition of "paparazzi images", a News International spokesman said the company had decided to "carry out a ban on paparazzi images as they are understood in the generic sense - as generally understood by everyone".
The trouble is, not everyone understands. Is it the destination that defines the picture's status? Does it make any difference if I am looking at an unsolicited photograph of Drew Barrymore in Heat, or in Vanity Fair? Or is it the origin of the photograph that counts? Is it a paparazzi shot only if taken by a freelancer? Or do pictures taken by staff photographers count? Or is it about the chase? For every photographer who takes a punch from Chris Martin, there's one who's making a tidy sum with a pre-arranged "chance encounter" between star and snapper.
